The goal of a Backgammon match is to move your pieces around the game board and get them off the game board faster than your challenger who works harder to do the same buthowever they move in the opposite direction. Succeeding in a round in Backgammon requires both strategy and luck. Just how far you can shift your chips is left to the numbers from rolling a pair of dice, and how you shift your checkers are determined by your overall playing plans. Players use different plans in the differing stages of a match based on your positions and opponent’s.

The Running Game Technique

The aim of the Running Game plan is to entice all your pieces into your inner board and get them off as fast as you can. This strategy focuses on the speed of shifting your pieces with absolutely no efforts to hit or barricade your competitor’s checkers. The ideal scenario to employ this technique is when you believe you might be able to shift your own pieces quicker than the opponent does: when 1) you have a fewer pieces on the board; 2) all your pieces have moved beyond your competitor’s chips; or 3) your opponent doesn’t use the hitting or blocking tactic.

The Blocking Game Strategy

The primary aim of the blocking tactic, by the title, is to stop your competitor’s checkers, temporarily, while not worrying about moving your checkers rapidly. Once you have established the blockage for the opponent’s movement with a couple of pieces, you can shift your other chips rapidly off the board. The player will need to also have a good strategy when to withdraw and move the chips that you used for blocking. The game gets interesting when your competitor utilizes the same blocking strategy.
