The Essential Basics of Backgammon Tactics – Part Two
September 18th, 2025 by Princess

As we dicussed in the last article, Backgammon is a game of talent and luck. The aim is to move your chips carefully around the board to your home board while at the same time your opposing player moves their chips toward their inner board in the opposing direction. With opposing player pieces heading in opposing directions there is going to be conflict and the need for particular strategies at specific times. Here are the two final Backgammon tactics to complete your game.

The Priming Game Strategy

If the goal of the blocking plan is to hamper the opponents ability to move her pieces, the Priming Game strategy is to absolutely stop any activity of the opponent by building a prime – ideally 6 points in a row. The competitor’s chips will either get bumped, or result a bad position if she at all attempts to leave the wall. The trap of the prime can be established anywhere between point two and point 11 in your half of the board. Once you have successfully constructed the prime to stop the activity of the opponent, your opponent does not even get a chance to toss the dice, and you move your checkers and roll the dice again. You’ll be a winner for sure.

The Back Game Technique

The objectives of the Back Game technique and the Blocking Game tactic are very similar – to hurt your competitor’s positions in hope to improve your chances of succeeding, but the Back Game tactic uses seperate techniques to achieve that. The Back Game strategy is frequently utilized when you’re far behind your opponent. To play Backgammon with this strategy, you need to hold two or more points in table, and to hit a blot (a single checker) late in the game. This strategy is more complex than others to play in Backgammon seeing as it needs careful movement of your checkers and how the pieces are relocated is partly the result of the dice roll.
